Learn to Regulate Your Brain
Neurofeedback (NFB) is a non-invasive intervention that teaches a person how to regulate his or her brain in order to increase overall functioning. Many mental health disorders are related to brain dysfunction. Unfortunately, medications act on the entire brain and body and often cause unwanted side effects. NFB allows a trained clinician to target areas of the brain and teach a person to re-regulate their neurology. This method is safe, non-invasive, and generally lasts for a lifetime.
NFB has been effectively used to help children, adolescents, and adults improve their overall performance and decrease symptoms of mental health conditions. The International Society for Neurofeedback and Research has archived hundreds of articles demonstrating this efficacy. Additionally, the American Association of Pediatrics named neurofeedback as one of the best treatments for childhood ADHD.

How NFB works |
Your brain is rewarded when it shows signs of becoming more regulated. This is commonly described as positive reinforcement, and the degree of regulation is measured in brainwave activity. Certain brainwaves are associated with dysfunction, and by learning to reduce the power of these waves while increasing the power of more adaptive ones, many symptoms can be alleviated over time.

What to expect |
Before your first NFB session, you and your clinician will discuss your treatment goals. The clinician will then develop a customized protocol based on your needs. During a NFB session, clients’ brainwaves are monitored using an electroencephalogram (EEG). Unlike talk-therapy, clients can read, do work, or close their eyes during NFB sessions. The computer will indicate your progress by providing a rewarding tone or other positive feedback.
To maximize the benefits from NFB training, it is recommended that you attend at least two sessions per week for ten to fifteen weeks. Between twenty and forty sessions are usually needed in order for the neurological changes to become more permanent. Most clients do not need to return for “tune-ups” after they have completed all of their sessions. Once new synapses are formed in the brain and have been strengthened over time, the older dysregulated wiring of the brain weakens. |
Insurance Coverage |
Despite the wealth of research over the past several decades, many insurance companies do not pay for neurofeedback services. MPC decided to allow patients to seek reimbursements privately, which allows us to charge a more reasonable rate for these services since our time is spent delivering care and not working on receiving payments from insurance companies.
